031/2A — PHYSICS 2A (ACTUAL PRACTICAL A)
Time: 2:30 Hours • Year: 2024

  • This paper consists of two (2) questions. Answer all questions.
  • Each question carries twenty five (25) marks.
  • All writings should be in blue or black ink, except diagrams (must be in pencil).
  • Mathematical tables and non‑programmable calculators may be used.
  • Communication devices and unauthorised materials are not allowed in the examination room.
  • Write your Examination Number on every page of your answer booklet(s).

1) Determination of Unknown Mass using a Metre Rule & Knife Edge

You are given two objects of different masses labelled x and w. The mass of w is 100 g but the mass of x is unknown. You are required to perform an experiment using a metre rule, cotton threads, and a knife edge.

Procedure
  1. Balance the metre rule on the knife edge, mark the centre of gravity as G.
  2. Suspend unknown mass x at distance a from G, and known mass w (100 g) at distance b from G.
  3. Record values of a and b.
  4. Repeat for a = 15, 20, 25, 35 cm.
Questions
  1. Tabulate values of a and b.
  2. Plot a graph of a (cm) against b (cm).
  3. State the nature of your graph.
  4. Determine slope of the graph.
  5. Calculate mass of x.
  6. Which principle is governing the experiment?

2) Determination of e.m.f and Unknown Resistance Q

You are to determine the e.m.f of the cells and unknown resistance Q.

Procedure
  1. Connect the circuit as in Figure 2 with R = 1 Ω.
  2. Close switch, read current I from ammeter.
  3. Repeat with R = 2, 3, 4, 6 Ω.
Questions
  1. Tabulate your results including values of 1/I.
  2. Plot graph of R (Ω) against 1/I.
  3. Determine slope and intercept.
  4. Compute e.m.f of cells and value of Q if internal resistance is 1 Ω.
  5. State effect on current if Q increases.
